Lake Wauburg

Lake Wauburg is RecSports’ lakefront property located approximately eight miles south of campus. Waterfront Lifeguards, Outdoor Recreation Assistants, and Challenge/Ropes Course Facilitators help to advance the mission of RecSports by providing outdoor recreation opportunities for participants.

Waterfront Lifeguard

Waterfront Lifeguards provide service to RecSports participants by overseeing the safety of our swim participants and assisting in the management of the lakefront area.

RecSports Team Members Responsibilities

  • Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests
  • Uphold and exceed the expectations of the Cornerstones of RecSports Service: accountability, anticipating needs, attitude, and atmosphere
  • Demonstrate a desire to learn and apply knowledge as a RecSports ambassador
  • Take ownership of RecSports facilities and programs by exhibiting a responsible work ethic
  • Promote and maintain cleanliness and appearance within and surrounding RecSports facilities
  • Enforce RecSports policies and procedures to promote participant safety and satisfaction
  • Respond to all emergency situations and adhere to established protocol including pre- and post- incident procedures

Area Specific Job Responsibilities

  • Observe and enforce all rules and regulations
  • Prevent injury and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to all emergency situations
  • Administer emergency first aid to victims of injury or illness
  • Communicate with other aquatic personnel the need for assistance and/or equipment
  • Educate facility users and inform them of the purpose and need for rules
  • Check Gator 1 Cards for entry into park while enforcing park entry rules and regulations in a diplomatic manner
  • Answer phone and inform the public of hours of operation, areas of interest, reservation policies and special events
  • Keep work area, gatehouse, boathouse and first aid room clean and uncluttered
  • Check equipment for low oil or fuel, grease and maintain equipment according to safety and operation manual guidelines
  • Check chlorine levels in the public drinking water and record at the end of the day
  • Maintain restrooms, clean, empty trash and re-stock daily
  • Clean Lodge and pavilions, empty trash daily
  • Perform grounds maintenance duties as instructed by supervisors

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Must have a current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR for the Professional, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in a waterfront, lake and park setting
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with the Aquatic staff, guests and the public.
  • Instructor certification is desirable.

Outdoor Recreation Assistant

Outdoor Recreation Assistants serve RecSports participants by managing the daily operations of the lake, including preparing the property for opening and closing, controlling facility access, overseeing waterfront equipment checkout, and maintaining the cleanliness of the Gatehouse, Boathouse and additional Lake Wauburg grounds.

  • First Aid, CPR, AED certification or ability to attain it within first week of employment
  • Outdoor recreation experience, rock climbing and team development experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in a waterfront, lake and park setting
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work harmoniously with the staff, guests and the public
  • Required to work regularly including weekends, holidays and nights

Challenge/Ropes Course Facilitator

Challenge Course/Ropes Course Facilitators serve RecSports participants by facilitating teambuilding experiences for groups that are used to promote, enhance, and support the development of healthy group relationships. Facilitators lead groups through high and low rope elements, as well as assist participants interested in climbing the Apline Tower or our 55 foot climbing wall.

  • Health and Safety:
    • Observe and enforce all rules and regulations.
    • Prevent injury and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.

    • Communicate with other personnel the need for assistance and/or equipment.
    • Educate the facility users and inform them of the purpose and need for rules.
      • Report all accidents to supervisors and complete all required reports.
        • Use all park equipment with extreme care at all times.
  • Physical Activity and Training:
    • Attend and participate in all in-service programs.
    • Maintain all required certifications during employment period.
    • Knowledge of personnel policy and procedures, facility rules and regulations.
    • Maintain good physical conditioning, strength, flexibility and speed.
  • Responsibilities of all Lake Wauburg Team Members:
    • Ability to perform all tasks for given area.
    • Assist in park activities, including but not limited to: Hands-on opening and closing duties, equipment check out, etc.
  • Responsibilities of Outdoor Team Challenge Course Facilitators (FIT):
    • Must participate, demonstrate proficient skills in a Low, Alpine Tower, and High Course training.
    • Must be able to teach a mini belay class within one semester of hire.
    • Responsible for consistent supervision of smaller groups of challenge course participants throughout entire course.
    • Responsible for managing risk and promoting well-being of participants, teammates and self.
    • Must track all training, courses facilitated and keep detailed records of hours.
    • Assist with set up, take down, opening, closing, cleaning and other duties as directed.
  • Machinery, Equipment and Maintenance:
    • Knowledge of Recsports, Lake Wauburg, & UFOTCC policies and procedures.
    • Ability to use non-motorized and motorized vehicles and watercraft.
    • Phone, computer, copy, fax.
    • Hand tools and power tools.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have a social security card.
  • Must have current CPR, First Aid and AED certification or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Will be required to successfully complete a background check.
  • Must be comfortable working at heights.
  • Will train, however experience leading activities, experiencing speaking in front of groups could be helpful.
  • Will train, experience with outdoor recreation and challenge/ropes courses desired.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with the staff, guests and the public.
  • Required to work regularly, including weekends, breaks, holidays and nights.
