Adult Swim Lessons

Adult Swimming Program

Adult group swim lessons are offered year round. Location changes seasonally alternating between Florida Pool and the O’Connell Center Pool. Please pay attention to pool location when registering for a session. All swim lessons are taught by our certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. Enrollment is limited to maintain an optimal teaching environment. Registration is completed on a first come, first served basis. Please limit your registrations to 2 days/week per session.

Registration & Cost:

Currently, all Adult group lessons are free and exclusively for UF currently enrolled students and Rec Sports members. Registration opens on the Monday 1 week prior to the session start date and closes the Sunday prior to the session start date.

Specific session offerings are available to review online via RS Connect. You may register online or in person at Southwest Recreation Center.

Beginning Summer A, 2018, all adult group lessons will have a registration fee associated with the class. 

Currently enrolled Student or Member$55 per session*
Non-Member$70 per session*

*Effective Summer A, 2018. Each session includes 8; 30 minute long classes.

Adult Spring Session Information:

       Session A: January 8th – February 1st (classes meet once per week at O’Connell Center Pool) 

       Session B: February 5th – March 1st (classes meet once per week at O’Connell Center Pool)

       Participants limited to 1 registration per person in Sessions A & B.

Level Descriptions:

       Adult Beginner:
       This class is tailored to the individual with little to no swim experience and may be apprehensive about completely submerging. Instructors work closely with swimmers to increase water confidence by guiding them through the process of basic movement in the water. The goals of this class are to teach proper breathing while swimming and recovery to a standing position from the horizontal floating position.
Skills Learned – Front crawl, elementary backstroke, breath control, submerging, rhythmic breathing, floating (on front/back), recovering from floating position.

       Adult Intermediate:
       Are you confident being in the water and ready to become a stronger swimmer? This class will improve stroke proficiency while increasing your endurance in the water. Participants will learn the basics of all six swimming strokes. Our instructors will provide you with the skill set to add swimming to your exercise plan. This class is recommended for those who must take a RecSports Swim Check in order to use water crafts at Lake Wauburg.
Skills Learned - Rotary breathing, 50-yard Freestyle swim, Elementary Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Back Crawl, Sidestroke, treading water

       Adult Advanced:
       Are you ready to take your workout to the next level? Maximize your fitness potential by adding another dimension to your water workout with stroke refinement of Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, and even flip turns! Sign up to work closely with a certified swimming instructor. This class is available to participants who are comfortable with rotary breathing and can swim at least one stroke for 50yrds without stopping. Individualized stroke refinement is offered during this session with feedback given to improve overall stroke performance.
Skills Learned – Refinement of: Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly. Flip Turns, Swim etiquette, basics of writing a swimming workout, introduction to interval training in the water, drills for improving technique

You must wear a bathing suit and bring your Gator 1 Card. We highly suggest you bring goggles and a towel. Goggles are an essential piece of gaining comfortability in the water. Places in Gainesville to purchase goggles include Dicks, Target, and Walmart.

Directions to O'Connell Center Pool

Enter the Stephen C O'Connell Center through the lower gate 3 facing Stadium Drive. You will walk down the wheelchair ramp (the outdoor pool will be on your right). Enter the indoor pool and visit the lifeguard desk in the middle of the pool to sign in.
