How to become a TRiP Leader

Want to learn the skills to guide others in the wilderness? Want to develop your leadership in a unique way? Want to work for CORE's Travel and Recreation Program (TRiP)?

Your Letter of Interest should answer the following questions:

How has the outdoors impacted you?

What motivates you to become a TRiP Leader?

How can your qualities & strengths benefit TRiP?

Please include a recent photo and your expected graduation date.

You will gain competence in group management, risk management and technical outdoor skills through interactive experiences in the classroom and in the field. Upon successful course completion, you will be eligible to hold a TRiP Leader position for the Center for Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE). 

This course will meet every Tuesday from periods 8–10 (3:00pm – 6:00pm) at CORE. 

There is an option for the course to be 3 credits. 

Group Interview at Lake Wauburg: 

Upon review of your resume and letter of interest, you may be asked to attend a group interview on October 15th from 2pm – 5pm at Lake Wauburg. 

Course Information: 

COST: $355

Course Cost Includes:

  • Weekly training classes every Tuesday from periods 8–10 
  • Florida Outdoor Recreation Association (FLORA) Conference Registration Fee January 19 – 21, 2018 at Wekiva Springs State Park
  • Training Trips:
    • Canoe Training: February 3rd-4th, 2018
    • iMMERSiON Training: Spring Break 2018
    • Stand-Up-Paddleboarding Training: March 25th, 2018
    • Surfing Training: April 8th, 2018

Course Cost Does NOT Include:

*One of the following certifications must be obtained outside of class by the beginning of Fall 2018 in order to apply for a TRiP Leader position with CORE. Your certification level plays a role in your TRiP Leader position (see below).

  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) – in order to become an Assistant Guide
  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) – in order to become a Lead Guide

Special Notes:

  • You must be available for all of Spring Break 2018.
  • You must obtain a WFA or WFR certification by Fall 2018 in order to qualify to lead TRiPs.
  • You are welcome to attend the weekly TRiP meetings every Wednesday at 8pm at CORE.
