How to become a TRiP Leader

Have a passion for the outdoors? Eager to learn the skills to guide others in the wilderness? Want to develop your leadership in a unique way?

...then you might be interested in applying to enroll in the Spring 2019 Outdoor Leadership Course (OLC) to be eligible to work for CORE's Travel and Recreation Program (TRiP)!

Come out to the OLC Information Session!

On Wednesday October 10th, 2018 at 8PM, come out to CORE (1441 Bledsoe Dr.) to learn more about the OLC and meet current TRiP Leaders.

Course Information

You will gain competence in adaptive leadership, group management, risk management and technical outdoor skills through interactive experiences in the classroom and in the field. Upon successful course completion, you will be eligible to hold a TRiP Leader position for the Center for Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE).

This course will fully prepare you with the skills to lead multi-day outdoor adventures! 

This course will meet every Wednesday, 3-6PM (subject to change)
There is an option for the course to be 3 credits.

COST: $425

Course Cost Includes:

  • Weekly training classes: Wednesday 3-6PM (subject to change)
  • Florida Outdoor Recreation Association (FLORA) Conference Registration Fee January 25-27, 2019
  • Training Trips:
    • Canoe Training: February 2nd-3rd, 2019
    • iMMERSiON Training: Spring Break 2019
    • Stand-Up-Paddleboarding Training: March 23rd, 2019
    • Surfing Training: April 6th, 2019
    • Shadowing Opportunity on a CORE Backpacking TRiP

Course Cost Does NOT Include:

*One of the following certifications must be obtained outside of class by the beginning of Fall 2019 in order to apply for a TRiP Leader position with CORE. Your certification level plays a role in your TRiP Leader position (see below). We will organize a Wilderness First Responder Course in May 2019.

  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) – in order to become an Assistant Guide
  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) – in order to become a Lead Guide

Application Information

Who Can Apply?

We are primarily seeking UF students in their first and second year.  

No prior outdoor experience is necessary. You just need a willingness to learn! 

How To Apply

Send your resume and letter of interest to David DiMauro (DavidD@recsports.ufl.edu) by Friday October 12th, 2018 at 11:59PM.

Your Letter of Interest should answer the following questions:

  • How can the outdoors impact an individual?
  • What motivates you to become a TRiP Leader?
  • How can your qualities & strengths benefit TRiP?

      *Please include a recent photo and your expected graduation date.*

Group Interview

Upon review of your resume and letter of interest, you may be asked to attend the Group Interview at Lake Wauburg on Sunday October 21st, 2018 at 10AM

Special Notes

  • You must be available for all of Spring Break 2019
  • You must obtain a WFA or WFR certification by Fall 2019 in order to qualify to lead TRiPs.
  • Once enrolled in the class you are expected to attend the weekly TRiP meetings every Wednesday at 8pm at CORE.
