Travel and Recreation Leader (trɪp lidər) noun: a passionate individual capable of overcoming adverse conditions and challenges who spreads their love of the natural world through intentional excursions into the wilderness.

This Spring, the Outdoor Leadership Course will be offered to students interested in learning the fundamentals of becoming a wilderness guide. Students will learn essential hard skills, coordinate logistics, and gain an extensive amount of leadership experience. Upon completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to become a TRiP Leader for the Center for Outdoor Recreation and Education as an employee of RecSports. This course is not for credit.

Information session :  September 26th at 8PM in the CORE Building (1441 Bledsoe Drive).

  • We will cover main details of the Outdoor Leadership Course and have time for Q&A.

Application Period: August 21st – October 1st, 2017 (Due by 11:59 P.M.)

  • Application decisions will be released mid-November.

Informal Interviews at Lake Wauburg (You are required to attend one of the following dates):

  1. Sunday, October 15th, 2017 at 10AM
  2. Sunday, October 22nd, 2017 at 10AM

We will play games, run scenarios, and get to know each other!

COST: $355

Course Cost Includes:

  • Weekly 3-hour training sessions with experienced outdoor guides (Time & Day TBD)
  • Registration fee for the Florida Outdoor Recreation Association (FLORA) Conference (Date & Location TBD)
  • Multiple training trips:
    • Canoe Training: February 3rd-4th, 2018
    • iMMERSiON Training: Spring Break 2018
    • Sea Kayaking Training: March 24th, 2018
    • Rock Climbing Training: May 7th-10th, 2018

Course Cost Does NOT Include:

*One of the following certifications must be obtained outside of class by the beginning of Fall 2018 in order to apply for a guide position. Your certification level plays a role in your guide position (see below).

  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) – in order to become an Assistant Guide
  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) – in order to become a Lead Guide

Special Notes:

  • You must be available for all of Spring Break.
  • You must obtain a WFA or WFR certification by Fall 2018 in order to lead TRiPs.
  • You are welcome to attend the weekly TRiP meetings every Wednesday at 8:30PM in the CORE building.
