American Red Cross Waterfront Skills Lifeguarding Module

The purpose of the American Red Cross Waterfront Skills Lifeguarding Module is to teach lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in nonsurf, open-water areas found at public parks, resorts, summer camps and campgrounds. To enroll, you MUST have a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. The class sessions take approximately 6 hours to complete. Participants MUST attend all class dates and successfully pass a water skills and written test.

Prerequisites:

  • Possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate.
  • Pass a prerequisite skills evaluation on the first day, consisting of the following:
    • Swim 550 yards continuously using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of the two.
    • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
    • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Skill sequence: swim 5 yards, submerge, and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface, and continue to swim another 5 yards.
