Join Florida Alternative Break (FAB) and Florida Trail Association (FTA) in performing trail maintenance on the unique Florida National Scenic Trail, also known as the Florida Trail. Volunteers and FTA staff will reopen and maintain the rugged Swamp Hammock section of this lovely trail within St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. UF Florida Alternative Breaks adopted this ~2.5 mile section in 2018. St. Marks NWR is one of the oldest wildlife refuges in the country and is renowned for its abundance of beautiful flora and fauna. The Florida Trail crosses the entirety of St. Marks NWR, providing the only backpacking experience in America within a National Wildlife Refuge.

Participants will get to experience the exotic sub-tropical landscapes of this coastal region, including coastal marshland, cypress swamps, and long-leaf pine forests– each presenting their own maintenance challenges. Trail work will involve clearing vegetation using loppers and hand saws as well as blazing. The crew will hike up to 4 miles each day. No previous trail maintenance experience is required. The FTA will provide all tools, personal protective equipment (PPE) and training.
