Lifeguard - Campus Pools

Life Guard Employment

The Aquatics unit delivers opportunities for participants interested in swimming and provides three on-campus pools including Florida Pool, Graham Pool, and the O’Connell Center Pool. Aquatics Lifeguards provide service to RecSports participants by overseeing the safety of our swim participants. All Lifeguards must currently have or be willing to obtain a Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid certification by the first day of employment. Check out our upcoming certification course offerings here.

Unit Specific Job Responsibilities

  • Perform all necessary lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR skills as certified by American Red Cross
  • Monitor the safety of swimmers and aquatic facility users
  • Prevent injuries by eliminating hazardous situations and behaviors
  • Monitor access to the aquatics facility to ensure only valid users and their guests are admitted
  • Enforce rules, regulations, and policies
  • Perform maintenance and cleaning, as needed
  • Monitor water chemistry, as needed
  • Attend mandatory departmental Fall training and all monthly meetings/in-services
  • Maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Aquatics & Risk Management Administrative Team

RecSports Team Member Responsibilities

  • Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants, and guests
  • Uphold and exceed the expectations of the cornerstones of RecSports service: Accountability, Anticipating needs, Attitude, and Atmosphere
  • Demonstrate a desire to learn and apply knowledge as a RecSports ambassador
  • Take ownership of RecSports facilities and programs by exhibiting a responsible work ethic
  • Promote and maintain cleanliness and appearance within and around RecSports facilities
  • Enforce RecSports policies and procedures to promote participant safety and satisfaction
  • Respond to all emergency situations and adhere to established protocol including pre- and post- incident procedures
  • All RecSports employees are expected to abide by the RecSports Code of Conduct process that clarifies shared expectations and standards in effort to best serve our patrons, develop each team member, and prepare student employees for future career endeavors

Requirements/Qualifications

  • University of Florida student
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification or willing to obtain by start date
  • Successfully complete the pre-employment water test
  • Commit 6-10 hours/ week (may include morning, evenings, and weekends)
  • Additional certifications required for merit advancement
  • Complete and maintain UF online certifications

Water Safety Instructor

The Aquatics program delivers opportunities for participants interested in swimming and provides three on-campus pools including Florida Pool, Graham Pool, and the O’Connell Center Pool. Aquatics Water Safety Instructors teach private and group swimming lessons for the Gator Community. All Water Safety Instructors must have or be willing to obtain a Water Safety Instructor and CPR/AED/First Aid certifications by the first day of employment. Unit Specific Job Responsibilities

  • Instruct group and private swimming lessons
  • Evaluate participant swimming ability and determine correct swim level
  • Create an educational, safe, and inviting experience for participants
  • Be available as needed to discuss the participant’s course evaluation with the parents/guardians and/or participants
  • Punctually meet all scheduled class times, fully prepared to teach
  • Attend all staff and evaluation meetings as requested
  • Adhere to and enforce all the policies and procedures
  • Complete all necessary planning and paperwork inherent to the class
  • Perform other job related tasks as assigned

Requirements/Qualifications

  • University of Florida student
  • Contribute 5-8 hours/week, dependent up on lesson schedule (evening and weekend hours)
  • Current Certification in CPR/AED/First Aid or willing to obtain within 30 days
  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or willing to obtain before teaching any lessons
  • Complete and maintain UF online certifications
