Lifeguard - Campus Pools

Life Guard Employment

The Aquatics program delivers opportunities for participants interested in swimming and provides four on-campus pools including Broward Pool, Florida Pool, Graham Pool, and the O’Connell Center Pool. Aquatics Lifeguards provide service to RecSports participants by overseeing the safety of our swim participants and facilitating swim lessons for youth and adults. All Lifeguards must successfully complete a pre-employment swim test in order to serve the UF community.

Area Specific Job Responsibilities

• Recognize and respond to emergencies
• Administer CPR/AED and First Aid in an emergency
• Prevent injuries by eliminating hazardous situations and behaviors
• Enforce rules, regulations and policies
• Complete Daily Logs and scan Gator 1 Cards
• Perform maintenance as needed and monitor water chemistry
• Inspect facilities for unsafe conditions, remedy the condition and/or notify supervisors
• Participate in departmental fall training and all in-service trainings
• Maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification
• Perform all other duties as assigned by the Coordinator for Aquatics

RecSports Team Member Responsibilities

• Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests
• Uphold and exceed the expectations of the Cornerstones of RecSports Service: accountability, anticipating needs, attitude, and atmosphere
• Demonstrate a desire to learn and apply knowledge as a RecSports ambassador
• Take ownership of RecSports facilities and programs by exhibiting a responsible work ethic
• Promote and maintain cleanliness and appearance within and surrounding RecSports facilities
• Enforce RecSports policies and procedures to promote participant safety and satisfaction
• Respond to all emergency situations and adhere to established protocol including pre- and post- incident procedures

Requirements/Qualifications

• Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification (can be in progress, but must be completed before teaching any lessons)
• Must be able to contribute 2-5 hours/week

Water Tests are conducted as part of the interview process for this position. Applicants may select one of the following dates and times:
– Monday, March 16th 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Florida Pool
– Monday, March 16th 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Florida Pool
– Tuesday, March 17th 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Florida Pool

**Water Test and Interview timelines will be modified due to campus health precautions. Candidates will be notified of details as they are available.**

Interviews will be conducted on March 18th and 20th at the Student Recreation & Fitness Center.

Water Safety Instructor

The Aquatics program delivers opportunities for participants interested in swimming and provides four on-campus pools including Broward Pool, Florida Pool, Graham Pool, and the O’Connell Center Pool. Water Safety Instructors work to facilitate swim lessons for youth and adults in the UF community.

Area Specific Job Responsibilities

• Lead swim lesson classes to specific class populations
• Prepare rosters, class curriculums, and set class space on the pool deck
• Point of contact with swim lesson registrants to communicate cancelled lessons or make-up schedules

RecSports Team Member Responsibilities

• Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests
• Uphold and exceed the expectations of the Cornerstones of RecSports Service: accountability, anticipating needs, attitude, and atmosphere
• Demonstrate a desire to learn and apply knowledge as a RecSports ambassador

Requirements/Qualifications

• University of Florida student
• Current American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
• Successfully complete the pre-employment water test
• Contribute 10-15 hrs/ week; additional special event hours required
• Additional certifications required for merit advancement
